Arrival

The Vienna-Schwechat Airport (VIE) is located 18 km southeast. The City Airport Train (CAT) takes 16 minutes nonstop to Wien Mitte (€14 one way, €24 return). Cheaper: the S7 (rapid transit) takes 25 minutes and costs only €2.40 with a Wiener Linien ticket. Taxi to the center: fixed price €39.

By train, Vienna is excellently accessible: ÖBB-Railjet from Munich (4 hrs, from €29), from Salzburg (2:20 hrs, from €19), from Budapest (2:40 hrs, from €14). The Vienna Main Station (opened in 2015) is modern and central.

Public Transport

Vienna's public transport network (Wiener Linien) is excellent: 5 subway lines, 29 tram lines, 127 bus lines. Everything runs on time, is clean, and operates until about 12:30 am (on weekends, the subways run 24 hours!).

  • Single ride: €2.40
  • 24-hour ticket: €8
  • 48-hour ticket: €14.10
  • 72-hour ticket: €17.10
  • Weekly ticket: €17.10 (Mon–Mon)

The Vienna City Card (€17 / 24 hrs, €25 / 48 hrs) includes public transport + discounts in 200+ museums and restaurants — worth it from 2 museum visits per day.

Accommodation

€ Budget: wombats City Hostel Naschmarkt (bed in dorm from €25), Motel One Wien-Staatsoper (double room from €89) — both central and clean.
€€ Mid-range: Hotel Capricorno (Schwedenplatz, double room from €120), Ruby Marie (Mariahilfer Straße, double room from €110) — stylish and well-located.
€€€ Luxury: Hotel Sacher (from €450), The Amauris (from €350), Park Hyatt Vienna (from €380) — for a special occasion.

Best Travel Time

April–June: Ideal. Mild temperatures (15–25°C), blooming parks, Heurigen season begins. Easter market on the Freyung.
July–August: Hot (30–35°C), many Viennese on vacation. Cheaper hotels, but humid air. Tip: Donauinsel and Alte Donau to cool off.
September–October: Perfect. Wine harvest, golden autumn, coffeehouse weather. Vienna's most beautiful season.
November–December: Christmas markets! Rathausplatz, Schönbrunn, Spittelberg — Vienna in Advent is magical. Cold (0–5°C), but atmospheric.
January–March: Ball season! Opera Ball (last Thursday in Carnival), Philharmonic Ball, over 450 balls. Cold, but culturally the most intense time.
