Naschmarkt & Freihausviertel★★

Wienzeile, 1060 Wien
Mo–Fr 6–19:30 Uhr, Sa 6–18 Uhr, So geschlossen

The Naschmarkt is Vienna's belly — and its most multicultural district. Since the 16th century, trading, haggling, and feasting have taken place here. Together with the adjacent Freihausviertel (4th district), it forms Vienna's liveliest neighborhood.

★★★ Naschmarkt

Stretching over 1.5 km, Vienna's largest market extends along the Wienzeile — around 120 stalls and eateries offer everything from Styrian pumpkin seed oil to Turkish baklava to Japanese sushi. The market reflects Vienna's immigration history: Austrian cheese stalls next to Balkan ćevapčići stands, Indian spice traders, and Persian restaurants.

The left side (towards Kettenbrückengasse) is more traditional — fruits, vegetables, meat, fish. The right side is more gastronomic — restaurants, wine bars, delicacies. Best to come in the morning (before 10 am) when the vendors lay out their fresh goods and the tourist crowds are still distant.

Wienzeile, between U4 Kettenbrückengasse and Karlsplatz. Mon–Fri 6 am–7:30 pm, Sat 6 am–6 pm. Saturdays additionally flea market (from 6:30 am at the western end). Closed Sundays!

★★ Jugendstil Houses on the Wienzeile

Directly at the Naschmarkt are two of Vienna's most famous Art Nouveau buildings: Otto Wagner's Majolikahaus (Linke Wienzeile 40) with its floral ceramic facade and the Medaillonhaus (No. 38) with gilded ornaments by Koloman Moser. Architectural highlights that are almost overlooked during a market stroll.

★★ Freihausviertel

South of the Naschmarkt, the former working-class district has transformed into a creative hotspot: independent galleries, vintage shops, natural wine bars, and Vienna's best third-wave cafés. The Schleifmühlgasse is the center of the scene — concept stores and ateliers line up here. Thursday evening is "Freihausviertel Evening": many galleries invite to vernissages with free wine.

★ Flea Market at Naschmarkt

Every Saturday from 6:30 am, the western end of the Naschmarkt transforms into Vienna's largest flea market: antiques, vinyl records, GDR cameras, k.u.k. porcelain, vintage clothing, and quirky finds. Early risers find the best pieces — from 9 am it gets crowded, from 11 am the selection thins out.

💡 Tipp

Saturday is Naschmarkt day: First rummage through the flea market at the western end (from 7 AM), then leisurely stroll east through the food market and have a Turkish breakfast with Menemen, flatbread, and tea at Umar (Stand 76) — 12 € for a feast.
