Food & Drink in the Interior

Away from Muscat, the cuisine becomes more rustic, honest, and regional. In the interior, traditional Omani dishes dominate, which have nourished the mountain dwellers and Bedouins for centuries — often in restaurants whose atmosphere alone is worth the trip.

Restaurant Tips Nizwa & Surroundings

Nizwa

Al Masharef Restaurant · City Center
The best traditional restaurant in Nizwa — right behind the Souq. Sit on the carpet in the Majlis room and order the Nizwa specialties: Harees (mashed wheat with meat), Arsiya (similar, but with shredded chicken), and Mishkak skewers from the charcoal grill. The portions are huge, the prices small: 1.5–3 OMR per dish.

Bayt Al Redaydah · Al Redaydah (8 km north of Nizwa)
A restored mud house that now serves as a restaurant — with a rooftop terrace and views of the mountains. The cuisine is traditional Omani with a touch of sophistication: Shuwa (when available), Mashuai, fresh salads, and homemade flatbread from the Tannur oven. The ambiance is unique — you dine in rooms that are 200 years old. 3–8 OMR.

Nizwa Heritage Restaurant · Near Nizwa Fort
Touristy, but good: terrace with a view of the fort, international and Omani cuisine. The mezze platter (2 OMR) and the freshly squeezed lime mint juice are recommended. A good option for lunch between fort and souq visits. 2–5 OMR.

Friday Market Breakfast · Nizwa Souq
On Friday mornings, the stalls around the livestock market serve fresh Rokhal bread (paper-thin flatbread, baked on a hot plate — you watch the women baking it), along with honey, cheese, and dates. A cup of Kahwa with it, and you have the most authentic breakfast in Oman for 0.50 OMR.

Bahla & Jabrin

Bahla Fort Restaurant · Opposite Bahla Fort
Simple restaurant with plastic chairs and the best biryani in the region. Locals eat here between fortress visits. 1–2 OMR. No flair, but honest food.

Jebel Akhdar

Juniper Restaurant (Anantara) · Jebel Akhdar
Fine Omani cuisine at 2,000 meters: Jebel Akhdar lamb with rosemary and pomegranate, rose petal desserts, and a wine list that surprises in a Muslim country. The view from the terrace into the canyon is priceless. 12–25 OMR per person. Reservation recommended.

Al Masjed Café · Saiq Plateau, Jebel Akhdar
Small café run by mountain dwellers: Kahwa, fresh pomegranate juice, and homemade cookies with rose petals. Sitting on the terrace, you hear the silence of the mountains. 0.50–2 OMR.

Wahiba Sands

In the desert, there are no restaurants — food comes with the camp package. Most camps serve a campfire dinner: grilled chicken or lamb, spiced rice, fresh salads, and dates for dessert. Dining under the starry sky, with the crackling of the fire and the absolute silence of the desert, is an experience no Michelin-starred restaurant can replace.
