The Interior — Oman's Wildest Heart
While the coast represents Oman outwardly, the interior is the soul of the country. Here, between the rugged Hajar Mountains and the endless deserts, lies what sets Oman apart from its neighbors: a landscape of breathtaking drama, settled, irrigated, and defended by the Omanis over millennia.
The Three Landscapes of the Interior
- Hajar Mountains: 700 km long, up to 3,009 m high, with the deepest gorges in the Arab world. The mountain range is Oman's watershed — springs feed the Falaj systems and the wadis. Jebel Shams and Jebel Akhdar are the highlights
- Oasis Cities: At the foot of the mountains lie the historic trading centers — Nizwa, Bahla, Adam, Ibri. Surrounded by date palm groves, irrigated by millennia-old Falaj canals, guarded by mighty fortresses. Here beat the cultural heart of Oman
- Deserts: The golden Wahiba Sands in the east, the endless gravel desert in the center, and on the southwestern edge the Rub al-Khali (Empty Quarter) — the largest contiguous sand desert on earth. In the desert, Bedouin families still live today, whose hospitality is legendary
