Hiking in Oman — The Best Routes

Oman is dramatically underestimated as a hiking destination: The Hajar Mountains offer routes from leisurely village walks to challenging canyoning — with almost guaranteed sunshine and a landscape that rivals the American Southwest in its drama.

Practical Hiking Tips

  • Start Time: Always start before 8:00 AM! After 11:00 AM, it becomes too hot for strenuous ascents. In winter (Dec–Feb), it is also possible in the afternoon
  • Water: At least 2 liters per person for short hikes, 3–4 liters for full-day tours. There are no water sources on most trails!
  • Marking: The official trails (W1–W9) are marked with blue and yellow arrow markings. Off the marked paths only with GPS and experience
  • Shoes: Sturdy hiking boots are mandatory — the rock is sharp-edged and loose. No sandals, no sneakers
  • Altitude Sickness: Jebel Shams reaches 3,009 meters — not a problem for most Europeans, but headaches can occur with rapid ascent. Walk slowly and drink plenty
  • Rescue: There is often no mobile network in the mountains! Always tell someone where you are going and when you expect to return. The emergency number 9999 works where there is reception

Al Hoota Cave — Oman's Stalactite Cave

The Al Hoota Cave is located 30 km north of Nizwa and is the only tourist-accessible cave in Oman: A 2 million-year-old stalactite cave with stalactites, stalagmites, and an underground lake inhabited by blind cave fish. The 45-minute guided tour (including a small train to the entrance) costs 7 OMR. Pleasantly cool inside (18°C!) — a welcome break from the heat. Closed on Mondays.

💡 Tipp

For the best hiking experience in Oman: Plan the Balcony Walk (Jebel Shams) for sunrise and the terrace villages (Jebel Akhdar) for late afternoon. And an insider tip: The Via Ferrata (climbing path) of the Anantara Hotel on Jebel Akhdar is also bookable for non-guests (25 OMR) — a secured climbing path along the rock edge with a view into the 2,000-meter canyon. One of the most spectacular experiences in the entire country.
