The Mountain of the Sun

The Jebel Shams (جبل شمس, "Mountain of the Sun") is at 3,009 meters the highest mountain in Oman — and home to the Grand Canyon of Arabia: Wadi Ghul (also Wadi Nakhr), a gorge over 1,000 meters deep, which is among the deepest in the world. The dimensions are breathtaking — and the comparisons to the Grand Canyon in Arizona are quite justified.

The Balcony Walk (W6)

The most famous hike in Oman: The Balcony Walk (officially: Trail W6, also "Rim Walk") follows an old donkey path along the edge of the gorge — with constant views into the over 1,000-meter-deep abyss. The path is not secured, at some points only 50 cm wide, and only suitable for hikers with a head for heights.

  • Route: Approx. 7 km (round trip), starting point: Parking lot at Wadi Ghul Viewpoint
  • Duration: 3–4 hours (leisurely, with photo stops)
  • Difficulty: Medium — no technical climbing, but exposed path, sturdy footwear mandatory
  • Highlight: The abandoned village of As Sab, whose ruins hang on a plateau above the abyss. One wonders how people lived here

Arrival & Accommodation

Jebel Shams is about 1.5 hours from Nizwa. The road is paved and in good condition, the last kilometers are steep — a 4x4 is recommended (a compact SUV with all-wheel drive usually manages as well). At the viewpoint, there are a few simple camps, and the Alila Jabal Akhdar is not far (on the neighboring Jebel Akhdar).

Achtung

The Balcony Walk is extremely exposed in some places — a wrong step can be fatal. Do not go in wind, rain, or poor visibility. Children only under constant supervision. Sturdy hiking boots, sufficient water (at least 2 liters), and sun protection are mandatory. Start in the morning, as it gets very hot in the afternoon.

Balcony Walk — Detailed Description

The Balcony Walk (W6) is THE hike in Oman. Here is the detailed itinerary:

Stages

  1. Parking Lot → First Viewpoint (20 Min.): From the parking lot at Wadi Ghul Viewpoint, the path starts on a wide gravel road. After 20 minutes, you reach the first view into the gorge — and your breath is taken away. The depth is unimaginable
  2. First Section — The Path (45 Min.): The path narrows and follows the cliff edge. An old donkey path carved into the rock. In some places, only 50 cm wide, the wall on the right, the abyss on the left. Surefootedness is essential
  3. Abandoned Village As Sab (Turning Point): After about 1.5 hours, you reach the ruins of As Sab — an abandoned village clinging to a rock plateau above the abyss. Terrace fields, stone houses, a Falaj channel — how people lived here is a mystery. The view from here is the absolute highlight: 1,000 meters straight down into Wadi Ghul, opposite the rugged rock walls of Jebel Shams
  4. Return (1–1.5 hours): Same way back. In the afternoon, the sun is at your back — better for photos, but hotter

Sunrise over the Grand Canyon

The sunrise at Jebel Shams is one of the most unforgettable natural spectacles in Oman. Staying overnight on the mountain is worth it for this alone.

When the first rays of the sun break over the horizon, they transform the 1,000-meter-deep gorge into a kaleidoscope of colors: first a pale pink, then gold, then bright orange, and finally the warm yellow of the day. The shadows of the opposite rock wall slowly climb up the canyon like a curtain opening. The silence at 3,000 meters is absolute — only the wind and perhaps the call of an eagle.

Overnight: At Wadi Ghul Viewpoint, there are simple camps and huts (10–25 OMR). The Jebel Shams Resort offers more comfortable rooms with a view into the gorge (from 40 OMR). Alternatively: Wild camping is tolerated at Jebel Shams — a night in a sleeping bag under the starry sky, with the canyon as a view, is an experience of a lifetime.
