Family, Faith & Karaoke
Three pillars define Philippine life:
Family (Pamilya)
The family is the foundation of Philippine society — and "family" here does not mean just mother-father-child, but the entire clan: grandparents, aunts, uncles, third cousins, godparents (Ninong/Ninang). Family obligations take precedence over everything. Those who earn money support the family — this is especially true for the 10 million OFWs (Overseas Filipino Workers) who work worldwide and regularly send money home. These remittances account for over 8% of the GDP.
Catholicism
The Philippines is the only Catholic country in Asia — over 80% of the population is Roman Catholic, a legacy of 333 years of Spanish colonial rule. Faith permeates everything: churches are full (even during the week), religious festivals (Fiestas) dominate the calendar, and every Jeepney has a rosary hanging in it. Holy Week is celebrated with dramatic passion plays — including real crucifixions with nails in some provinces.
Karaoke
The Philippines is the karaoke nation of the world. Every village has a karaoke machine, and Filipinos sing with a passion and vocal power that leaves Europeans speechless. "My Way" by Frank Sinatra has even led to fatalities (no joke — the "My Way Killings" were a phenomenon where bad singers were shot). Karaoke is not a hobby, it is a way of life. Be ready to be handed the microphone — and sing along. The Filipinos will cheer you on, no matter how bad you are.
