Jeepney Culture & OFW

Two phenomena that make the Philippines unique:

Jeepneys — Moving Artworks

The Jeepneys are the national symbol of the Philippines — converted US military jeeps from World War II that became the world's cheapest and most colorful means of mass transportation. Each Jeepney is a unique artwork: chrome decorations, religious motifs, horse statues on the hood, neon lights, and slogans like "God Bless Our Trip" or "Born to be Wild".

The government has been modernizing the Jeepney system since 2017 — old diesel Jeepneys are being replaced by "E-Jeepneys" (electric, air-conditioned). The modernization program is politically controversial: it improves air quality but threatens the livelihood of Jeepney drivers who cannot afford the new models.

OFW — Heroes of the Nation

Over 10 million Filipinos work as Overseas Filipino Workers (OFW) abroad — as nurses, seafarers, domestic workers, IT professionals, engineers. They send over 30 billion dollars home each year, making them the economic backbone of the country. OFWs are officially revered as the "Bagong Bayani" (New Heroes) of the nation.

The downside: families are separated for years, children grow up without parents, and working conditions (especially in the Gulf States) are often exploitative. The OFW phenomenon is both a source of pride and a wound in Philippine society.
