Opposite Porto's old town, on the southern bank of the Douro, lies Vila Nova de Gaia — technically a separate city, but inextricably linked with Porto. Here, over 50 port wine cellars (caves) line the hill, from big names like Taylor's, Graham's, Sandeman, Cálem, and Ferreira to small boutique producers. Since the 17th century, port wine has been stored and aged here — the cool, humid microclimate by the river is ideal.

A cellar tour with tasting is the highlight of any Porto visit. Most houses offer 30- to 60-minute tours through the atmospheric cellars, where thousands of barrels rest in the darkness, followed by a tasting of 2–3 port wines (Ruby, Tawny, White). Prices start at €15–20 for a standard tour, premium tastings with old Tawnys or Vintage Ports cost €30–60.

Taylor's has the most elaborate tour with an interactive museum and a terrace with breathtaking views of Porto — but also the highest prices (€22 standard). Graham's impresses with its elegant lodge and excellent restaurant Vinum on the terrace. Sandeman is the most famous name (recognizable by the Zorro-like logo) and offers the cheapest tours (€15). Cálem combines the tour with a Fado show (€25) — kitschy but atmospheric.

For those who want to dive deeper: The Espaço Porto Cruz is a modern port wine experience center with a rooftop bar, multimedia exhibition, and restaurant. And the small cellar Poças offers more personal tours away from the crowds.

Plan 2–3 hours if you visit a cellar. In summer, be sure to book online in advance — especially Taylor's and Graham's are often fully booked.

💡 Tipp

Don't just visit the big names! The small winery Augusto's in a side alley offers personal tours in German for only €12 with generous tastings. Insider tip: The Teleférico de Gaia (cable car, €7 one way) runs from the riverbank to the upper bridge level — spectacular views and saves the steep climb.
