Nightlife & Fado in Porto

Porto's nightlife is casual, affordable, and surprisingly diverse. The city doesn't have the grand clubs of Lisbon, but it does have an authentic bar culture influenced by its large student population. The epicenter is Rua da Galeria de Paris and the surrounding streets in the Clérigos/Galerias district — here, over 30 bars are packed into a small area, and on weekends, people spill out onto the street.

Fado in Porto differs from Lisbon's Fado: It is less melancholic and more influenced by the Guitarra de Coimbra. The best Fado houses are intimate and authentic. Casa da Guitarra (Av. Vímara Peres) offers daily shows at 6:30 PM and 9:30 PM (€20 with a glass of port wine). Ideal Clube de Fado on Rua das Flores has a relaxed atmosphere and occasional live shows (free entry, drinks from €5). For bars: Aduela (Rua das Oliveiras) is a favorite among locals — tiny, crammed with vintage furniture, cheap drinks. Café Candelabro is a bookstore-bar combination with craft beer and literary readings. BASE on the Douro waterfront offers cocktails with a view of the bridge. And for wine lovers: the Prova Wine Bar on Rua de Ferreira Borges with over 200 Portuguese wines from €4 a glass.

Important to know: In Porto, nightlife starts late — before 11 PM, there's little going on in the bars, and clubs open only at midnight. The Galerias district is liveliest from Thursday to Saturday. Drink prices are very fair: beer from €1.50, wine from €2, cocktails from €6.
