“Aqui… onde a terra se acaba e o mar começa" — Here, where the land ends and the sea begins. This is how Portugal's national poet Luís de Camões described the Cabo da Roca, the westernmost point of the European mainland. At 38°47' north latitude and 9°30' west longitude, a 140-meter-high cliff juts into the Atlantic — behind you lies all of Europe, before you only water to America.

The place is of rugged, wind-swept beauty. A white lighthouse from the 18th century stands on the cliff, surrounded by low, wind-shaped vegetation. The cliffs drop vertically into the roaring sea. In storms, the waves crash up to 30 meters high against the rock. In clear weather, you can see the Berrichon Islands on the horizon.

In the small visitor center (former guardhouse), you can have an official certificate issued confirming that you were at the westernmost point of Europe (about €11 for the simple certificate, €25 for the deluxe version on parchment). Kitschy? Yes. Do you do it anyway? Of course.

The true magic lies in the hike along the cliffs. From Cabo da Roca, paths lead north to Praia da Ursa (one of Portugal's most beautiful and wildest beaches, accessible only via a steep 20-minute descent) and to Praia da Adraga. To the south, it goes to Praia do Guincho, a legendary wind and kitesurfing spot.

The most impressive is Cabo da Roca at sunset — when the sun sinks into the Atlantic and the sky explodes in orange and violet. Arrive at least 30 minutes before sunset and secure a spot on the cliff. In summer, the sun sets only around 9 PM, perfect after a day in Sintra.

💡 Tipp

Bus 403 runs from Sintra station via Cabo da Roca to Cascais (and back) — about every 60 min., journey about 40 min., single ticket €4.55 from Sintra. For those arriving by car: Free parking, but full after 4 PM in summer. Alternative: By bike from Cascais (about 25 km, hilly but rewarding).
