Minneriya — the Elephant Gathering★★★

Parkeintritt: 3.500 LKR (~10 €) + Jeep ab 6.000 LKR

The Minneriya National Park is the scene of one of Asia's largest natural spectacles: the Elephant Gathering. Between July and October, when the reservoir shrinks during the dry season and reveals lush grasslands, up to 300 wild elephants gather on its shores — herds from all over northern Sri Lanka migrate here.

The scenery is surreal: Hundreds of elephants — bulls, cows, calves — bathing, playing, feeding, and interacting against the backdrop of the reservoir and surrounding mountains. In addition, there are buffaloes, crocodiles, pelicans, and dozens of other bird species.

Safari Info

  • Best Time: July – October (Gathering), but elephants can be seen year-round
  • Safari Duration: Half-day safari (3–4 hours), afternoon from 2:30 PM is ideal
  • Cost: Park entrance 3,500 LKR (~10 €) + Jeep rental 6,000–10,000 LKR (~17–28 €) per Jeep (for up to 6 people)
  • Alternative Parks: Kaudulla and Hurulu Eco Park offer similar experiences if Minneriya is too crowded (the parks rotate depending on water levels)

💡 Tipp

Book the afternoon safari (2:30–6:00 PM) — the elephants come to drink and bathe at the water when the heat subsides. Ask at the hotel which of the three parks (Minneriya, Kaudulla, Hurulu) currently offers the best sightings — this depends on the water level.

Achtung

Maintain at least 25 meters distance from the elephants. Some jeep drivers get too close — this is dangerous and stresses the animals. Insist on respectful distance and change drivers if necessary.
