Sigiriya is Sri Lanka's landmark and one of the most fascinating archaeological monuments in Asia. A 200-meter-high magma block rises like a giant monolith from the flat jungle — on its summit, the ruins of a 5th-century palace built by King Kashyapa, who murdered his father and fled here from his half-brother.

The ascent over 1,200 steps leads through several levels: First through the famous water gardens with their symmetrical pools and fountains (which still function after 1,500 years!), then up a spiral staircase to the world-famous Cloud Maidens frescoes — 21 semi-nude female figures, presumably representing Apsaras (celestial dancers), painted in vibrant colors that have survived the centuries.

The path continues along the Mirror Wall (once so polished that the king could see his reflection) to the Lion's Platform: Two massive stone lion paws flank the final steep ascent to the summit. Once, the path led through the gaping mouth of a giant lion — the head has long weathered away, but the paws still impress today.

On the summit, the ruins of the royal palace stretch out: Swimming pools, throne halls, gardens — all at 200 meters height. The 360-degree view over the endless jungle and surrounding reservoirs is breathtaking, especially at sunrise.

💡 Tipp

Be there at the opening at 7:00 AM — the heat becomes unbearable from 10 AM, and tour buses arrive from 9 AM. Alternatively: Ascend at 3:30–4:00 PM for the sunset from the summit (the park closes only at dark). Bring at least 2 liters of water. The ascent takes 1.5–2 hours.

Achtung

The wasps at the Mirror Wall and in the Lion's Platform area are no joke — during swarm attacks, the ascent is occasionally closed. Do not wear bright colors, perfume, or deodorants. In case of a wasp alert: Stay calm, do not swat, slowly retreat.
