Mihintale — the Cradle of Buddhism★★
Mihintale is considered the place where Buddhism took root in Sri Lanka. Here, in 247 BC, the Indian monk Mahinda (son of Emperor Ashoka) is said to have met King Devanampiya Tissa and brought Buddhism to the island. For Buddhists, Mihintale is therefore one of the most significant pilgrimage sites.
A wide stone staircase of 1,840 steps leads up the mountain — past monastery ruins, meditation caves, and relief stones. On the summit awaits a white dagoba and a spectacular panoramic view over the flat plain to Anuradhapura. Mihintale is only 12 km east of Anuradhapura and can be perfectly combined as a half-day excursion.
💡 Tipp
Best visited in the early morning or late afternoon — the 1,840 steps in the midday heat are brutal. Mihintale is much quieter than Anuradhapura and offers a contemplative atmosphere. On the full moon Poya day in June (Poson Poya), the largest religious festival is celebrated here.
