Arugam Bay — Sri Lanka's surf capital★★★

Arugam Bay on the east coast is Sri Lanka's most famous surf spot and one of the Top 10 Surf Destinations in the World. The sleepy fishing village has transformed into a relaxed surf and backpacker community, attracting surfers from around the world from April to October.

The Surf Breaks

  • Main Point (Arugam Bay Point): The main break — a long, perfect right-hand wave breaking over 200 meters. For advanced surfers.
  • Baby Point: Gentle waves for beginners, right on the main beach. Surf schools from 3,500 LKR (~10 €) for 2 hours including board.
  • Pottuvil Point: North of the main beach, less crowded, consistent waves.
  • Peanut Farm: 5 km south, one of the best breaks on the east coast — for experienced surfers.
  • Elephant Rock: Spectacular break at Panama Beach, often with elephants on the beach (!).

Beyond Surfing

  • Kumana National Park: 20 km south, less visited than Yala, but with elephants, leopards, and one of Sri Lanka's most important bird sanctuaries.
  • Lahugala National Park: Small but fine — wild elephants almost guaranteed, and the entrance is cheap.
  • Panama Beach: Wild, deserted beach with sand dunes and elephants coming from the jungle to the beach.

💡 Tipp

The best surfing time is June – August. In the off-season (November – March), Arugam Bay is practically deserted — many accommodations and restaurants close. Surfboard rental from 1,500 LKR (~4 €) per hour, daily rental 3,000–4,000 LKR.

Achtung

The road from Ella to Arugam Bay passes through the Yala National Park corridor — wild elephants regularly cross the road here, especially at dusk. Drive during the day and slowly!
