Negombo — Beach by the airport★
Negombo is just 15 minutes from the airport and is the classic place for the first or last night in Sri Lanka. The city is not a dream destination — the beach is mediocre, the tourism slightly run-down — but it has its own unpretentious charm.
What Negombo Offers
- Fish Market: One of the largest and liveliest fish markets in Sri Lanka — early morning (from 5 a.m.) a spectacle of fresh catch, negotiations, and colors.
- Dutch Canal: A Dutch canal from the 17th century, which can be explored by boat — mangroves, birdlife, and village life.
- St. Mary's Church: Impressive Catholic church — Negombo has a strong Christian tradition (the Portuguese missionized here in the 16th century).
- Beach: Wide, dark sand, sunsets over the sea. Not a postcard beach, but perfectly fine for relaxing after the flight.
💡 Tipp
Negombo is ideal for the first night after arrival or the last night before the return flight. Early risers should definitely visit the fish market — it doesn't get more authentic than this. Good seafood restaurants right on the beach from 1,000 LKR for a fish dinner.
