Trincomalee — Temples & Dream Beaches★★
Trincomalee (short: Trinco) on the northeast coast is one of Sri Lanka's best-kept secrets: a natural deep-sea harbor surrounded by some of the island's most beautiful beaches, Hindu temples, and a millennia-old multicultural history.
Beaches
- Nilaveli Beach: An endless white sandy beach with crystal-clear water — often deserted. One of the most beautiful beaches in Sri Lanka. 15 km north of Trinco.
- Uppuveli Beach: Closer to the city, with restaurants and accommodations on the beach. A good compromise between infrastructure and beauty.
- Pigeon Island: Small island off Nilaveli with the best snorkeling in Sri Lanka — corals, tropical fish, and reef sharks. Boat trip from 2,000 LKR round trip.
Cultural Highlights
- Koneswaram Temple: One of the five holiest Hindu temples in Sri Lanka, spectacularly perched on a cliff over the sea. The temple was destroyed by the Portuguese in the 17th century and later rebuilt. Coordinates: [8.5767, 81.2333].
- Fort Frederick: Portuguese fortress from the 17th century, guarding the access to the Koneswaram Temple. Tame deer roam freely through the grounds.
- Whale Watching: From May to August, blue whales can also be spotted off Trincomalee — an alternative to the more crowded Mirissa.
💡 Tipp
Trincomalee is the perfect east coast alternative to the south coast: same quality of beaches, fewer tourists, lower prices. Best travel time April – September (when the south coast has monsoon). Combine Trinco with Arugam Bay for a complete east coast trip.
