Ha Giang — Vietnam's Wild North★★★
If Sapa is Vietnam's most famous mountain region, then Ha Giang is its wildest and most spectacular. The province in the far north, on the Chinese border, is a UNESCO Global Geopark — and the motorcycle route through the Đồng Văn Karst Plateau is the ultimate Vietnam adventure.
Why Ha Giang?
The Ha Giang Loop (→ see also Chapter Hanoi & North) is more than a motorcycle tour. It is a journey into a Vietnam that hardly exists anymore: Hmong markets on Sundays, where families in colorful costumes from remote villages gather, children on water buffaloes, terraced cornfields on 60-degree slopes, and a silence only interrupted by the wind and the sound of engines.
Special Experiences
- Sunday Market Đồng Văn: Every Sunday, Hmong, Dao, Tày, and Lô Lô gather to trade. Colorful costumes, rice wine, live animals — one of Vietnam's most authentic markets.
- Mã Pí Lèng Skypath: A new viewpoint on the legendary pass — glass platform over the 1,000-meter abyss to the Nho Quế Gorge. 50,000 VND (1.85 €).
- Lũng Cú Flag Tower: The northernmost point of Vietnam — a huge flag on a mountain peak at the Chinese border. The ascent (389 steps) rewards with a 360° panorama.
- Vuông House of the Hmong Kings: A fortified palace from the 19th century — the residence of the last Hmong opium king. Hidden in a valley near Sà Phìn, an architectural gem. 20,000 VND.
Achtung
Ha Giang is a border area with China. The permit (approval from the police in Ha Giang city) is mandatory! Without a permit, you risk fines and problems. Most hostels in Ha Giang assist with obtaining it (30 min., free of charge).
