Mai Châu — Rice Fields & Stilt Houses★★

Mai Châu, Hòa Bình Provinz
Bus Hanoi → Mai Châu: 3–4 Std., 100.000 VND
Homestay: 200.000–400.000 VND (7,40–15 €) p.P. inkl. VP

Mai Châu is the gentle alternative to Sapa — an idyllic valley, only 3–4 hours west of Hanoi, surrounded by green mountains and inhabited by the Thái minority. Here, there are no crowds, no cable cars, just rice fields, stilt houses, and the warm hospitality of the Thái.

What Makes Mai Châu Special?

  • Homestays in Stilt Houses: Sleep on the floor of a traditional Thái house, eat with the family, and drink the local rice wine (Rượu Cần) with long bamboo straws from a clay jug. Price: 200,000–400,000 VND (7.40–15 €) per person including dinner and breakfast.
  • Bicycle Tours: The flat paths through the rice fields are perfect for cycling. Bicycles can be rented in the village (30,000 VND/day).
  • Trekking: Easy hikes to remote Thái villages (half-day to full-day).
  • Thái Dance Performances: In the evenings at many homestays — traditional dances with an invitation to join in.

💡 Tipp

Mai Châu is perfect as a 2-day trip from Hanoi or on the way to Ninh Bình. On weekdays, the valley is almost empty — on weekends, Vietnamese tourists come. The homestays in the village of Pom Coọng are the most authentic.
