Protaras — the quiet alternative
Protaras is only 10 km east of Ayia Napa, but it's a completely different world: quiet, family-friendly, well-maintained. There is no club mile here, but rather beach promenades, fish & chips restaurants (British heritage), and mini-golf.
Highlights
- Fig Tree Bay: The star beach (see above) — perfect for families
- Profitis Ilias: The small chapel on the 100 m high hill offers the best 360° view of the region. 150 steps, best at sunset. Illuminated Way of the Cross in the evening.
- Magic Dancing Waters: Water fountain show with music and light effects. Kitschy, but kids love it. Evenings, entry 25€.
- Ocean Aquarium: Small aquarium with penguins (!), crocodiles, and tropical fish. Suitable for a rainy day. 12€ adults.
For whom?
Protaras is ideal for families with children, couples seeking tranquility, and beach lovers who want to avoid Nissi Beach parties. The hotels are often cheaper than in Ayia Napa, and the beaches are at least as beautiful.
