Arrival
Nicosia has no airport (the old one is in the UN buffer zone). Larnaca (LCA) is the nearest airport (50 km, 40 min). Intercity bus: 7€, taxi: 40–50€. Buses from Limassol (4€, 1:15h) and Paphos (7€, 2h).
Accommodation
Old Town: Most atmospheric. Recommendation: The Landmark (boutique, renovated old townhouse), Classic Hotel (mid-range, central). Few hostels — Nicosia is not a backpacker destination.
North Nicosia: Significantly cheaper. Boutique hotels in the old town from 40–60€/night.
Most Cyprus travelers visit Nicosia as a day trip from Limassol, Larnaca, or the south coast. This works well, but an overnight stay is worthwhile for the nightlife and authentic atmosphere.
Day Trips from Nicosia
- Troodos & Kykkos Monastery: Full day, 1.5h drive. Combine with barn-roof churches.
- Lefkara: Half day, 45 min drive. Lace, Loukoumi, stone architecture.
- Macheras Monastery: Half day, 40 min. In the mountains south of Nicosia, atmospheric and little visited.
- Tamassos & Idalion: Ancient city kingdom ruins in the Mesaoria plain. For archaeology fans.
Achtung
Nicosia in July/August is extremely hot (40°C+). Sightseeing only early morning or evening. Always have water with you. The air-conditioned museums are the perfect midday plan.
