Troodos Mountains
The Troodos Mountains are the geological and spiritual heart of Cyprus — a massif of 90 million-year-old ophiolite rock (oceanic crust pushed to the surface), rising up to 1,952 m (Olympos/Chionistra). Up here, it is 10–15°C cooler in summer than on the coast, and in winter, snow falls — there is even a small ski lift on Mount Olympos.
★★★ Barn-Roof Churches (UNESCO)
10 small Byzantine mountain churches have been UNESCO World Heritage Sites since 1985. Externally inconspicuous — simple stone buildings with steep wooden roofs to protect against the Troodos snow. Inside reveals a treasure: frescoes from the 11th to the 16th century of exceptional quality and color. The best:
- Panagia tou Arakou, Lagoudera: The most spectacular frescoes (1192). The depiction of the Virgin Mary with Child is considered a masterpiece of the Komnenos period.
- Agios Nikolaos tis Stegis, Kakopetria: Frescoes from the 11th–17th century layered in a single church — a palimpsest of Byzantine art.
- Panagia Podithou, Galata: Italo-Byzantine frescoes (1502) with Western European influences — Renaissance meets Byzantium.
- Archangelos Michael, Pedoulas: Frescoes from 1474, easily accessible in the pretty cherry blossom village of Pedoulas.
Scattered across the Troodos villages. Free or 1–2€. Opening hours irregular — the keyholder (Kleidofylakas) usually lives next door. Bring patience. A Troodos tour to 3–4 churches takes a whole day.
★★★ Kykkos Monastery (Moni Kykkou)
The richest and most famous monastery in Cyprus sits at an altitude of 1,318 m on the western flank of the Troodos. Founded around 1100 AD, it houses an icon of the Virgin Mary, traditionally said to have been painted by Apostle Luke himself — one of three Luke icons worldwide. The icon is so sacred that it is covered with a silver curtain and no one is allowed to see it.
The monastery itself is a complex of cloisters, mosaics, gilded wood carvings, and an excellent museum with Byzantine manuscripts, icons, and liturgical objects. The first president of Cyprus, Archbishop Makarios III, was trained here as a novice — his grave is on the Throni Hill above the monastery.
65 km west of Nicosia, 1,318 m altitude. Free (museum 5€). Daily 10:00–16:00 (Nov–May), 10:00–18:00 (Jun–Oct). Appropriate clothing (long pants, covered shoulders). 1–2 hours.
Mountain Villages in the Troodos
★★ Kakopetria
The most popular mountain village in the Troodos — a perfectly restored stone village at an altitude of 700 m with the UNESCO church Agios Nikolaos tis Stegis. Narrow alleys, stone bridges, mills, trout restaurants. A cool retreat in summer, spectacular foliage in autumn.
★★ Platres
The most famous mountain resort in Cyprus at an altitude of 1,100 m, once the summer residence of British colonial rulers and the Egyptian King Farouk. Today: hotels, hiking trails, the Kaledonia waterfalls (3 km hike), home-bred trout, and a chocolate factory (Mavros). Starting point for the Olympos summit.
★ Lefkara
Famous for two things: Lefkaritika lace (UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage) and Loukoumi. The women of Lefkara have been crafting the finest lace tablecloths for centuries — Leonardo da Vinci is said to have purchased a cloth here for the Milan Cathedral. Also: charming stone houses, a small lace museum, and silversmith workshops.
40 km southwest of Nicosia, 650 m altitude. Lace museum 1€. Ideal as a stopover on the drive from Larnaca to Troodos.
★ Pedoulas
Idyllic cherry blossom village at an altitude of 1,100 m on the northern slope of the Troodos. Famous for the UNESCO church Archangelos Michael, cherry orchards (harvest in June), and the Byzantine Museum. A good starting point for the Kykkos Monastery (35 min.).
Hiking in the Troodos
The Troodos offers some of the best hiking trails in Cyprus — through pine and cedar forests, past waterfalls, and through mountain villages.

💡 Tipp
The Artemis Trail around the Olympos summit is the most popular hiking route — and the easiest. 7 km at an altitude of 1,850 m through ancient black pine forest with panoramic views. Start in the morning when the air is clearest.
