Learning to Surf — Waves for Every Level★★

Kuta Beach, Batu Bolong Beach, Echo Beach — gesamte Südwestküste
Beste Surf-Zeit: morgens 6:00–10:00 und nachmittags 15:00–18:00 (weniger Wind)
Anfängerkurs (90 Min.): 300.000–400.000 IDR (17,50–23€) | Board-Verleih: 50.000–100.000 IDR/Halbtag (2,90–5,80€)

Bali's southwest coast is one of the best places in the world to learn to surf — and one of the few where you won't get bored as an advanced surfer for years. The combination of warm water (27–29°C year-round, no wetsuit needed), consistent swell from the Indian Ocean, and a variety of waves for every skill level makes Bali the ultimate surf mecca.

For absolute beginners, there are three ideal beaches: Kuta Beach (gentle beach break, sandy bottom, long whitewater waves for practice), Batu Bolong Beach in Canggu (similar to Kuta but less crowded, also sandy bottom), and Legian Beach (the quieter section between Kuta and Seminyak). The surf schools at these beaches offer 90-minute beginner courses from 300,000–400,000 IDR (17.50–23€) including softboard, rash guard, and a few unavoidable washing machine experiences in the surf.

For advanced surfers, it gets exciting: Echo Beach (reef break, powerful left and right waves at mid-tide, caution: sharp reef), Berawa Beach (fast beach break with hollow waves, good at high tide), and the legendary Canggu Reef (Pererenan, reef break with long, clean left waves). Those who really can paddle out at Uluwatu (Bali's most famous wave, 45 minutes south) — a spectacular reef break in front of dramatic cliffs that produces world-class barrels with overhead swell. Only for experienced surfers!

The best surf season on the west coast is the dry season (April–October), when the constant southwest swell delivers the best waves. In the rainy season (November–March), the swell shifts to the east coast — then Sanur or Keramas is the better choice. Board rental costs everywhere 50,000–100,000 IDR (2.90–5.80€) per half-day, long-term rental (month) from 800,000 IDR (~47€). The Odyssey Surf School (Kuta) and Surf WG (Canggu) are considered the most professional schools with certified ISA instructors.

💡 Tipp

Three beginner mistakes to avoid: 1) No sun protection — you're in the tropical sun on the water for 2 hours, and you'll burn even on cloudy days. Apply reef-safe sunscreen SPF 50! 2) Surfing without a rash guard — the wax on the board rubs your stomach like sandpaper. 3) Surfing at the reef break before you're ready — the reef is razor-sharp, and cuts get infected quickly in a tropical climate.
