Lake Como (Lago di Como)★★★
Lake Como is the most romantic of the northern Italian lakes: deep blue, framed by steep mountains, lined with magnificent villas and Mediterranean gardens. George Clooney has his villa here (Villa Oleandra in Laglio), and Hollywood glamour mixes with long-established Italian elegance.
Bellagio ★★★
The "Jewel of Lake Como" sits on the peninsula where the two arms of the lake meet. Narrow alleys with boutiques, the Villa Melzi (€8) with Japanese garden and lake view, plus some of the best restaurants in the region. Bellagio is touristy, but deserves its reputation. Ferry from Como (2h, €11) or speedboat from Varenna (15 min., €5).
Villa del Balbianello ★★★
The most photogenic villa in Italy: located on a peninsula near Lenno, with terraced gardens above the lake. Known as a filming location for "Casino Royale" and "Star Wars: Episode II". Accessible only by boat or hiking trail. Garden €10, garden + villa €20.
Varenna ★★
Less touristy than Bellagio, but equally charming: pastel-colored houses, the Villa Monastero (€8) with botanical garden, and the Passeggiata degli Innamorati (Lovers' Path along the lake). A good starting point for hikes and ferry rides. Directly accessible by train from Milan (1h, from €7).
Como
The lakeside town at the southern end: elegant old town with the Cathedral (14th–18th century, mix of Gothic and Renaissance), the Funicular (cable railway) to Brunate (panoramic view, €6 return), and good restaurants. Como is the most practical starting point for the lake (train station with direct trains to Milan).
💡 Tipp
The most beautiful way to experience Lake Como: ferry from Como to Bellagio (2h, slow boat, all lakeside villages are visited), lunch there, then speedboat to Varenna (15 min.), visit Villa Monastero, and return to Milan by train. A perfect day trip.
