Practical information for the Kvarner Bay
The most important tips for planning your Kvarner trip:
Arrival & Transport
Airport: Rijeka Airport (RJK) is located on the island of Krk, about 30 km from Rijeka. In summer, direct flights from Germany (Eurowings, Ryanair) from Stuttgart, Cologne, Berlin. Alternatively: Zagreb Airport (2 hrs. drive) or Pula (1.5 hrs.).
Car: From Munich approx. 5.5 hrs. via Salzburg–Ljubljana–Rijeka (toll in Slovenia: vignette 15€/week, Croatia: toll route approx. 15€). From Vienna approx. 5 hrs. The A6/E65 motorway ends directly at Rijeka.
Rental Car: Almost indispensable for island hopping. Cheapest at Rijeka Airport (from 25€/day). Important: For ferries, you need a rental car with permitted ferry use (specify when booking!). Most rental companies allow it, but ask beforehand.
Ferries: Jadrolinija (jadrolinija.hr) serves all Kvarner islands. Main routes: Valbiska (Krk) → Merag (Cres), Jablanac → Mišnjak (Rab), Brestova → Porozina (Cres). In summer: be at the ferry port at least 1 hr. before departure (queues!). Online reservation possible and recommended. Catamarans (passengers only, no cars) from Rijeka to Mali Lošinj, Rab, and Cres.
Buses: Arriva and local providers connect the larger towns. Not suitable for the island interior and remote bays.
💡 Tipp
The ferry Valbiska → Merag (Krk → Cres) is the bottleneck route in summer: waiting times up to 3 hours! Best to travel in the morning before 9 am or in the evening after 6 pm. Alternatively: bypass via Brestova (Istria) → Porozina on Cres.
Best Travel Time
High Season (July–August): Hot weather (28–32°C), warm sea (24–26°C), all restaurants/beaches/ferries at full capacity. Crowded beaches, highest prices. Book in advance!
Ideal: June and September. Warm weather (24–28°C), sea still warm for swimming (22–25°C), significantly fewer tourists, cheaper prices. Most restaurants and attractions are open. Perfect balance.
Pre-season (April–May): Pleasantly warm (18–24°C), nature in full bloom, very few tourists. Sea still fresh for swimming (16–20°C). Some restaurants and hotels on the islands still closed.
Post-season (October): Still mild (18–22°C), sea warm until mid-October. Many island locales close at the end of September. Ideal for hikers and culture enthusiasts.
Winter (November–March): Mild on the coast (5–12°C), most island accommodations closed. Opatija and Rijeka lively year-round. Carnival in Rijeka (January–February) is the winter highlight.
