Almond & Orange Blossom

Every year in February, Mallorca transforms into a pink-white sea of blossoms — and it is one of the most beautiful natural spectacles Europe has to offer. Around 7 million almond trees cover the Es Pla plain and the slopes of the Serres de Llevant. When they bloom — depending on the weather from late January to early March — the landscape looks like a painting by the Impressionists.

The almond blossom (Flor d'ametller in Catalan) begins in the lower, warmer areas of the island's center and then spreads to the higher elevations. First, the trees around Llucmajor and Campos bloom (end of January), then the plain around Sineu, Santa Maria, and Binissalem (early February), and finally the slopes of the Tramuntana and the area around Sóller and Fornalutx (mid to late February). This gives you several weeks to experience the spectacle.

The best spots for the almond blossom:

The country road Ma-3011 from Llucmajor to Algaida leads through a sea of almond trees — in February, a dream in pink and white. Just stop by the roadside and stroll through the groves. Especially beautiful in the morning when the dew is still on the blossoms.

The area around Marratxí and Santa Maria del Camí (15–20 minutes north of Palma) also offers spectacular almond blossoms — and is the easiest to reach. Along the old country road (Ma-13a), hundreds of almond trees stand in rows.

The Puig de Randa offers a unique view: From the terrace of the Monastery Cura, you can see the entire plain — in February, an endless white carpet with green dots (olive trees) and red roofs (villages). Unforgettable.

Around Son Servera and Artà in the east, there are extensive almond groves that are less visited than those around Llucmajor — a tip for those who want to photograph in peace.

Parallel to the almond blossom, the orange trees bloom in the Sóller valley — white blossoms with an enchanting scent that fills the entire valley. The combination of orange blossom in Sóller and almond blossom in the plain makes February one of the most beautiful months in Mallorca — with temperatures around 15–18°C, without mass tourism, with cheap flights and hotels.

Photo tips: The best light is in the morning (7:30–9:30 a.m.) and evening (4:30–6:00 p.m.). Backlighting through the blossoms creates magical effects. Bring a wide-angle lens for the landscape and a macro for individual blossoms. The most beautiful pictures are taken on slightly cloudy days when the light is soft and diffuse — direct midday sun makes the blossoms pale.

💡 Tipp

February is also attractive in terms of price: Flights from Germany often under €50 (Ryanair, Eurowings), hotels 30–50% cheaper than in summer, rental cars from €15/day. Combine the almond blossom with a winter hiking holiday in the Tramuntana — the temperatures (12–18°C) are perfect for hiking, and the Serra de Tramuntana is particularly dramatic in winter.

Achtung

The almond blossom is weather-dependent and can vary each year. A cold January delays the bloom, a warm one accelerates it. A storm or heavy rain can knock off the blossoms within a few days. Those coming specifically for the almond blossom should plan flexibly — and accept that nature has its own schedules. Check current bloom reports on local Mallorca blogs (e.g., mallorcazeitung.es).
