Thamel & City Life★★
★★ Thamel — The Heart of Tourist Kathmandu
Thamel is Nepal's backpacker mecca and at the same time the most practical base for any traveler. In this labyrinth of narrow alleys, you'll find everything you need — and much you didn't know you needed — in a small space.
History of Thamel
Until the 1960s, Thamel was a quiet residential area of the Newar middle class. Then the hippies came. On the "Hippie Trail" from Istanbul via Tehran and Kabul to Kathmandu, Thamel (or the nearby Freak Street / Jhochhen Tol) was the final stop — attracted by cheap hashish, spiritual quests, and the exotic flair. With the trekking boom of the 1980s, the center shifted from Freak Street to Thamel, and the district developed into what it is today: a mix of outdoor paradise, tourist trap, and invaluable infrastructure.
What You Find in Thamel
- Trekking Equipment: Dozens of outdoor shops sell down jackets, sleeping bags, trekking shoes, and poles — many of them "North Face" or "Marmot" at prices unthinkable in Europe. Quality varies: Genuine branded goods are available from authorized dealers (recognizable by the logo in the window), alongside good no-name products and clear fakes. Bargaining is a must! Starting price: 50–60% of the asking price. Tip: "Shona's Alpine" and "Northface Nepal" (authorized) have the best quality
- Trekking Agencies: Hundreds of agencies organize everything from guides and permits to complete trekking packages. Compare AT LEAST three offers and read online reviews. Good agencies: Nepal Wilderness Trekking, Nepal Eco Adventure, Adventure Club Nepal. Look for: registered with NTB (Nepal Tourism Board), licensed guide, clear contract
- Nightlife: Thamel's bars offer live music (Nepali rock and jazz!), cheap cocktails, and the company of trekkers from around the world. Recommendations: Sam's Bar (institution for 30 years, live music every night), Rum Doodle Bar (legendary mountaineer bar, ceiling full of signed Yeti feet from Everest climbers), Jazz Upstairs (the only real jazz club in Nepal, above a steakhouse)
- Bookstores: Pilgrim's Book House and Mandala Book Point — two of the best English-language bookstores in South Asia. Trekking maps, Buddhist literature, Nepali history. Browsing is worthwhile!
★★ Garden of Dreams (Swapna Bagaicha)
Amidst the chaos of Thamel lies an oasis of tranquility: A neoclassical garden from 1920, created by Field Marshal Kaiser Shumsher Rana after the model of European pleasure gardens. Originally, the garden included six pavilions, three entrances, and a zoo — today, three pavilions, pergolas, fountains, and neatly trimmed hedges are restored. A surreal contrast to the dust and noise outside.
The garden was restored with the support of the Austrian government and reopened in 2006. It is especially beautiful in the evening light — sometimes classical music concerts or art exhibitions take place here.
Kaiser Mahal, Tridevi Marg (entrance opposite Fire & Ice Restaurant). 200 NPR entry. Daily 9:00–22:00.
★ Freak Street (Jhochhen Tol)
The legendary hippie district of the 1960s/70s is now a sleepy shadow of its former self — but that's exactly what gives it its charm. Located south of Durbar Square, you'll find cheaper accommodations than in Thamel, more authentic restaurants, and a nostalgic atmosphere. The "Snowman Café" and "Jasmine Dreams" recall the era when Bob Segal and Cat Stevens sat here on the floor smoking hashish.
