Beaches & Matosinhos★★

Praia de Matosinhos, Matosinhos
Strand: frei zugänglich. Restaurants: 12–23 Uhr
Fisch-Hauptgerichte ab 9–15 €

Porto itself is on the Atlantic, but the coast here is rugged — dramatic cliffs, strong currents, and cool water (14–18 °C in summer). Not the Mediterranean, but instead spectacular scenery and some of Europe's best surf spots. The main seaside resort for Porto visitors is Matosinhos, just 15 minutes by metro (line A) from the center.

The Praia de Matosinhos is a wide, long sandy beach with lifeguards, showers, and beach bars. Unlike the rocky beaches in the city center (Praia dos Ingleses, Praia do Carneiro), Matosinhos is sandy and family-friendly. The beach is popular with surfers — surf schools offer beginner courses from €35 for 2 hours including equipment.

The real reason to visit Matosinhos is the food. Rua Heróis de França is Porto's "Restaurant Row" — here, over 20 fish restaurants line up, serving the freshest fish in the city, straight from the nearby fishing port. Grilled sardines (Sardinhas assadas), sea bass (Robalo), octopus (Polvo) — all on the charcoal grill, accompanied by a cool Vinho Verde. Prices: fish main courses from €10–15, significantly cheaper than in the Ribeira.

For architecture lovers: Matosinhos is home to several works by Álvaro Siza Vieira, Portugal's most famous architect — including the Piscina das Marés swimming pool in Leça da Palmeira, built into the rocks and considered a masterpiece. Further north lies the Praia de Leça with its lighthouse and wilder character.

💡 Tipp

The insider tip for fish in Matosinhos: Don't go to the most touristy restaurants right on the beach, but one or two blocks inland. The "Restaurante A Marisqueira de Matosinhos" on Rua Tomás Ribeiro offers huge portions of grilled fish from €9 — locals line up. On Saturday mornings, the fish market at the harbor is worth a visit.
