Discovering Tunis
Tunis is a city of contrasts. On one side, the Medina — a UNESCO-protected labyrinth from the 7th century with over 700 historic monuments, winding alleys, and lively souks. On the other side, the Ville Nouvelle (New Town) with wide Parisian-style boulevards, Art Deco facades, and air-conditioned cafés.
The city, with around 2.7 million inhabitants in the metropolitan area, is not only the political center but also the cultural heart of Tunisia. It is home to the country's best museums, the most vibrant art scene, and the most interesting restaurants. Additionally, it boasts a unique geographical location: Situated on the Gulf of Tunis, with the ruins of Carthage to the north, the picturesque Sidi Bou Said above it, and the seaside resorts of La Marsa and La Goulette right next door.
Plan at least 2–3 days for Tunis and its surroundings. The Medina alone deserves a whole day, the Bardo Museum half a day, and Carthage + Sidi Bou Said perfectly fill another day.
Orientation
Tunis is clearly structured:
- Medina (Old Town): The UNESCO-protected heart of the city, founded in 698. Mosques, palaces, hammams, and souks in a maze of alleys. The Ez-Zitouna Mosque (Olive Tree Mosque) forms the center. The souks are organized by crafts: perfume (Souk el-Attarine), wool (Souk el-Leffa), goldsmiths (Souk el-Berka).
- Ville Nouvelle (New Town): The French colonial city (from 1881) stretches east of the Medina along Avenue Habib Bourguiba — Tunisia's "Champs-Élysées" with plane trees, street cafés, and the National Theatre. Modern life pulsates here.
- Bardo: Western suburb, known for the museum of the same name in the former Beylical palace. Accessible by Métro Léger.
- Carthage: Northern suburb on the Gulf. The ancient ruins are scattered over a hill with sea views. By TGM train in 25 min. from the center.
- Sidi Bou Said: The blue-and-white artist village on the hill above Carthage. TGM station directly in the village.
- La Marsa: Beach suburb at the end of the TGM line. Cafés, restaurants, beach. Where wealthy Tunisians live.
- La Goulette: Port suburb, known for its fish restaurants. Cruise ships dock here.

The TGM train (Tunis Marine → La Marsa) is your best friend: It connects the city center, Carthage, Sidi Bou Said, and La Marsa for only 0.50€. Runs every 15 minutes, travel time 35 min. to the final station.
