Pura Luhur Uluwatu is one of Bali's six holiest temples—a Hindu sea temple perched on a 70-meter-high cliff above the Indian Ocean. The location is simply breathtaking: Below you, waves thunder against the rocks, behind you, the 11th-century temple stretches out, and on the horizon, the sun sets in a play of colors that leaves even seasoned travelers speechless.

The Temple

The complex consists of several courtyards with typical Balinese Candi Bentar (split gates) and intricate stone carvings. The innermost area is reserved for believers, but the publicly accessible part and the cliff path offer spectacular views. The circular path along the cliff (about 30 minutes) leads to various viewpoints—each more photogenic than the last.

Entrance: 50,000 IDR (~3€). Sarong rental at the entrance included (mandatory for all visitors). Open: daily 7 AM–7 PM.

★★★ Kecak Dance at Sunset

The absolute highlight—every evening at 6 PM, the Kecak performance begins on the open-air stage at the cliff's edge. Over 70 men sit in a circle, creating a hypnotic soundscape with rhythmic "Cak-cak-cak" chanting, while dancers perform scenes from the Hindu Ramayana epic. The climax: When the sun sets behind the dancers into the sea, and the fire dance begins, with a performer walking barefoot through glowing coconut shells.

Ticket: 150,000 IDR (~9€). Seats are not numbered—arrive at least 30 minutes early to secure a good spot. The left side offers the best view of the sunset during the performance.

Beware: Monkeys!

The temple is home to a large population of gray long-tailed macaques known for being aggressively mischievous. They steal sunglasses, phones, water bottles, and anything shiny or easily snatched. Secure all valuables in closed bags. Remove glasses or secure them with a strap. Do not feed, do not make eye contact, no sudden movements.

💡 Tipp

Combine the temple visit with the Kecak dance: Arrive at 4:30 PM, explore the temple and the cliff path at leisure (1–1.5 hours), and then catch the Kecak performance at 6 PM. This way, you experience the temple in the golden afternoon light and the dance at sunset—the perfect program.
