Discovering Rome

Rome is a city of layers — literally. Beneath every modern street lie ancient ruins, beneath every Baroque church medieval foundations, beneath every Renaissance palace Etruscan remnants. The city has 2,700 years of history, and you can feel every single one of them. Here's an overview of the main districts.

Centro Storico (Historic Center)

The heart of Rome between Piazza Navona, Pantheon, Trevi Fountain, and Piazza di Spagna. A labyrinth of Renaissance facades, Baroque churches, and winding alleys where gelaterias, antique dealers, and hidden trattorias line up. Here, tourist Rome meets the elegant Rome of boutiques and coffee houses. Most beautiful early in the morning or late at night when the day tourists have disappeared.

Trastevere

Rome's most atmospheric district lies beyond the Tiber (trans Tiberim). Ivy-covered facades, narrow cobblestone alleys, laundry on lines between houses, street musicians on Piazza Santa Maria in Trastevere in the evenings. Tranquil by day, Trastevere becomes a nightlife district in the evening — trattorias with candles on the tables, wine bars, students, and tourists mingle. It's even more authentic in upper Trastevere (towards Gianicolo Hill), where fewer tourists venture.

Testaccio

The culinary heart of Rome. This former working-class district at the former slaughterhouse is now a pilgrimage site for foodies: Here, Cacio e Pepe, Carbonara, and the Quinto-Quarto cuisine (offal) were invented. The Mercato Testaccio is Rome's best food market. In addition, there are craft beer bars, bakeries, and some of the city's most authentic trattorias. Few tourists, lots of Roman life.

Monti

Rome's oldest residential district, between the Colosseum and the main station Termini, has developed into a hip neighborhood. Vintage shops, independent boutiques, wine bars, and small galleries line Via del Boschetto and Via Panisperna. The Piazza della Madonna dei Monti is the evening meeting point for young Romans. Monti combines Bohemian charm with antiquity — the Roman Forum is around the corner.

Vatican & Prati

The Vatican City is the smallest country in the world (0.44 km²) and hosts the Sistine Chapel, St. Peter's Basilica, and the Vatican Museums. The adjacent district Prati is an elegant residential area with wide boulevards, good restaurants, and significantly fewer tourists than the Centro Storico. Ideal as a hotel base if you want to visit the Vatican.
