Day trips from Rome
Rome is an excellent starting point for day trips:
Tivoli: Villa d'Este & Villa Adriana ★★★
30 km east of Rome. The Villa d'Este (UNESCO) has Italy's most spectacular Renaissance gardens: Hundreds of fountains, water features, grottoes, and panoramic terraces. The Villa Adriana (Hadrian's Villa, UNESCO) is a sprawling complex from the 2nd century with replicas of buildings admired by Emperor Hadrian on his travels. Train from Termini to Tivoli (1h, 3 €).
Ostia Antica ★★
Rome's ancient port, 30 km southwest. Less famous than Pompeii, but almost as impressive — and much less crowded. Well-preserved streets, baths, theaters, and mosaics. Metro B to Piramide, then Roma-Lido train to Ostia Antica (30 min., 1.50 €). Entry 12 €.
Orvieto ★★
Medieval town on a tuff cliff in Umbria. The Cathedral of Orvieto has one of Italy's most magnificent Gothic facades. Also: underground caves, good wine (Orvieto Classico), and a quiet, non-touristy atmosphere. High-speed train from Termini (1h 10, from 10 €).
