Imlil & Berber Villages★★
Imlil is the gateway to the High Atlas—a small mountain village at 1,740 meters, about 90 minutes south of Marrakesh. It is the starting point for climbing Toubkal, but even without summit ambitions, it is a wonderful place to immerse yourself in the world of Berber culture.
The Village
Imlil has adapted to hiking tourism without losing its character: stone houses with walnut tree balconies, terraced fields, mules on the paths, call to prayer from the tiny minaret. The locals speak Tamazight (Berber) among themselves and Arabic or French with guests. Numerous Gîtes (mountain lodgings) and simple hotels offer overnight stays from 150 MAD, including half-board with excellent Berber cuisine.
Day Hikes
Around Imlil, there are fantastic day hikes for all levels of difficulty:
- Aroumd (Aremd): 30 minutes uphill—a fortified Berber village (Agadir) with panoramic views. Have tea with a family
- Tacheddirt: 4-5 hour circular hike over the Tizi n'Tamatert Pass (2,279 m) with views of Toubkal
- Setti Fatma (Ourika Valley): Reachable by car, 7 waterfalls hike (2-3 hours)
- Azzaden Valley: Multi-day trek through one of the most remote valleys of the High Atlas
Berber Hospitality
In the villages around Imlil, you can experience the legendary Berber hospitality up close: mint tea is offered even to the foreign hiker, and those who stay in a Gîte eat with the family. The tagine, which simmers for hours on a charcoal kanoun, often tastes better here than in the most expensive restaurants in Marrakesh.
💡 Tipp
From Marrakesh to Imlil, Grands Taxis (shared taxis) depart from Bab er-Rob—about 50 MAD per person, 90 minutes. Alternatively, accommodations in Imlil organize a private transfer (about 350 MAD).
