Toubkal Ascent★★★

The Jebel Toubkal (4,167 m) is the highest mountain in North Africa and a surprisingly accessible destination: In just two days, you can reach the summit from the village of Imlil (1,740 m) and return—without technical climbing, ropes, or special equipment (in summer). It is a challenging mountain hike, not mountaineering in the alpine sense, and that's what makes Toubkal so popular.

The Standard Route (2 Days)

Day 1: Imlil (1,740 m) → Refuge du Toubkal (3,207 m). About 5-6 hours ascent through the Mizane Valley, past the village of Sidi Chamharouch (a pilgrimage site with hot springs) and over increasingly rocky terrain to the mountain hut. The Refuge (CAF hut) offers simple sleeping places and meals.

Day 2: Early start (5-6 a.m.), 3-4 hours to the summit over steep scree and spring snowfields. The summit view is breathtaking: On a clear day, it stretches from the Sahara in the south to the Atlantic in the west, over the entire High Atlas and the Anti-Atlas mountains. Descent in 5-6 hours back to Imlil.

Preparation & Requirements

No alpine experience is needed, but a good basic fitness and hiking experience are required. The biggest challenge is the altitude—headaches and nausea above 3,500 m are common. Drink plenty, go slowly, and ideally spend a night in Imlil for acclimatization. A local mountain guide has been mandatory since 2019 and costs about 500-700 MAD per day (mule for luggage: 300 MAD extra).

Best Time

June to September: Snow-free, warm weather, long days. In midsummer (July/August), it can be very hot on the lower sections. October-November and April-May: Possible, but snowfields at the summit require crampons. Winter (December-March): Full winter ascent with ice axe and crampons, only for experienced climbers.

💡 Tipp

Book the mountain guide directly at the Bureau des Guides in Imlil (official, certified guides)—not through middlemen in Marrakesh, who charge double the price. Pack sunscreen, a hat, and a warm jacket for the summit—even in summer, it can be below 5°C at the top.
