Trekking Tips for the Atlas

The Atlas Mountains are one of the world's best and most underrated trekking areas—scenically diverse, culturally fascinating, and logistically straightforward. Here are the most important tips for mountain hikes in Morocco.

Mountain Guides

For the Toubkal National Park, a licensed mountain guide has been mandatory since 2019. In other regions of the Atlas, it is recommended but not strictly necessary. Official guides (with ID) can be found in the Bureau des Guides in Imlil, Setti Fatma, Azilal, and other base villages. Costs: 400-700 MAD per day (depending on region and difficulty). A good guide knows the paths, speaks Berber for encounters in the villages, and organizes mules for the luggage.

Accommodations

In most valleys, there are Gîtes d'étape—simple mountain lodgings with mattresses, blankets, and meals (dinner + breakfast about 150-200 MAD). The mountain huts (Refuges) at Toubkal are somewhat more comfortable. On multi-day treks off the beaten path, camping with tents is done—the guide organizes everything.

Equipment

  • Shoes: Ankle-high hiking boots with good soles (the ground is often loose gravel)
  • Clothing: Layers! Below 35°C, above 5°C on the same day. Always carry a wind and rain jacket
  • Sun Protection: The UV radiation at altitude is brutal—SPF 50, hat, sunglasses
  • Water: At least 2 liters per day. In the villages, you can refill (bring water purification tablets)
  • Headlamp: For early ascents and huts without electricity

Best Trekking Routes

  • Toubkal Circuit (3-5 days): Imlil — Lac d'Ifni — Toubkal — Imlil. Classic of the High Atlas
  • M'Goun Traverse (4-6 days): Second highest mountain in Morocco (4,068 m), more solitary than Toubkal, through the spectacular M'Goun Valley with red gorges
  • Jebel Saghro (3-5 days): Between Atlas and Sahara—volcanic rock towers, nomad tents, dry desert mountains. Ideal in winter (November-February), when the High Atlas is snow-covered
  • Ourika Valley — Imlil (2 days): Cozy crossing over the Tizi n'Tamatert Pass, with overnight stay in a mountain village

Altitude Sickness

Above 3,000 meters, altitude sickness can strike: headaches, nausea, dizziness, insomnia. The golden rule: Do not ascend too quickly (maximum 500-600 meters in altitude per night above 2,500 m), drink plenty, descend immediately if symptoms occur. Most problems on Toubkal arise because people ascend too quickly from Imlil (1,740 m) to the Refuge (3,207 m).

Achtung

Do not underestimate the Atlas! Even in summer, thunderstorms, fog, and temperature drops can make the terrain dangerous. Never hike alone in remote areas, share your route, and always carry enough water and warm clothing.
