Alte Feste & Independence Memorial Museum★★
The Alte Feste is Windhoek's oldest building — built in 1890 as a fortress for the German Schutztruppe, it served as the military headquarters of the colonial power. The whitewashed fort with its distinctive battlements overlooks the city and is now a national monument.
Right next to it, the modern Independence Memorial Museum rises — a striking glass building opened in 2014 (built with North Korean assistance, which was controversial). The museum tells Namibia's history from an African perspective: from the resistance of the Herero and Nama against German colonial rule to the SWAPO's struggle against South African occupation and independence in 1990.
In front of the museum stands the large Sam Nujoma Statue — Namibia's first president with a raised fist, a symbol of the liberation struggle. The view from here over Windhoek is excellent.
💡 Tipp
The combination of colonial fortress and independence museum makes the contrast of Namibian history tangible. Plan at least 1–2 hours.
