Katutura — Township Tour★★
Katutura is Windhoek's largest township — and a place that tells the other side of Namibian history. The name means "the place where we do not want to live" in Otjiherero and dates back to the 1960s when the South African apartheid government forcibly relocated the black population.
Today, Katutura is a vibrant, growing neighborhood with over 100,000 residents, markets, hair salons, shebeens (informal bars), and incredible energy. A guided tour shows:
- Kapana Grills: The best street food stalls in Windhoek — huge pieces of meat are prepared on open grills. A must-try!
- Single Quarters: The oldest part of Katutura with the historic hostel buildings of the mine workers
- Penduka Women's Project: Women's cooperative producing beautiful textiles and patchwork
- Oshetu Community Market: Colorful market with fruits, vegetables, and traditional remedies
The best tours are organized by Katjambia Tours or Face of Namibia Tours — led by residents, with proceeds staying in the community.
