Discover Windhoek

Windhoek is the smallest and most relaxed capital in Africa. With only about 450,000 inhabitants, nestled in a basin at 1,700 meters altitude, the city feels more like a cozy small town than a metropolis. And that is exactly its charm.

What immediately stands out: the German influence. Street names like Kaiser-Wilhelm-Straße (now Independence Avenue), bakeries with rye bread and rolls, a "Brauhaus" in the city center, and a Lutheran church that looks like it was imported from the Black Forest. Around 20,000 German Namibians live in the country, and in Windhoek, you surprisingly often hear German on the street.

For most Namibia travelers, Windhoek is the start and end point — and deserves at least 1–2 days. The city offers excellent restaurants, exciting museums, lively markets, and with the Daan Viljoen Game Park, a taste of Namibian wildlife right on the doorstep.

Orientation

Windhoek is compact and easy to navigate. The city center can be explored on foot, for the suburbs you need a car or taxi.

  • Independence Avenue: The main axis of the city — lined with shops, cafés, banks, and the distinctive clock tower. Pedestrian-friendly and the heart of Windhoek
  • Alte Feste / Tintenpalast: The historic core on the hill — with parliament, Christuskirche, and the Independence Memorial Museum. Best panoramic view of the city
  • Klein Windhoek: Quiet, green suburb east of the center with the best restaurants and guesthouses. As a tourist, this is the nicest place to stay
  • Katutura: Windhoek's largest township, created during the apartheid era. Name means "the place where we do not want to live" in Otjiherero. Today a vibrant neighborhood with markets and street food — township tours recommended
  • Eros / Ludwigsdorf: Upmarket residential areas with shopping malls (Maerua Mall, Wernhil Park)

💡 Tipp

Windhoek is safe for pedestrians in the city center during the day. At night, you should take a taxi — the city is quiet and poorly lit in the evenings. Uber does not work in Namibia, but many guesthouses arrange taxis.
