Equipment & Tips
- Own Snorkeling Gear: Worth bringing — rental gear is not always available or in good condition. Mask, snorkel, and fins are enough
- Neoprene Shoes: Essential! The rocks and corals are sharp-edged. Regular flip-flops offer no protection
- Rash Guard (Sun Protection Shirt): The Omani sun burns your back in 20 minutes while snorkeling. A long-sleeved UV shirt is invaluable
- Do Not Touch Corals: Of course — but it must be said: Corals are sensitive living organisms. Touching destroys them and can cause painful cuts
- Currents: Especially on the east coast and at Fahal Island, currents can be strong. Never snorkel alone and inform yourself about local conditions
💡 Tipp
For first-time visitors: The Daymaniyat Islands are the best snorkeling spot — organized tours from Muscat with all equipment from 25 OMR. For the independent: Bandar Khairan is the easiest to reach and offers good snorkeling directly from the beach. And an insider tip: Ask the dhow captain in Musandam if he can stop at a special reef — the locals know hidden spots that aren't in any travel guide.
