Lake Bled (Blejsko jezero)
Lake Bled is Slovenia's postcard motif — and one of those rare places that is even more beautiful in reality than in photos. A 2,120 m long, emerald-green lake, in the middle of which lies a small island with a pilgrimage church, overlooked by a medieval castle on a 130 m high cliff. Behind it: the snow-capped peaks of the Julian Alps and the Karawanks.
You can reach Blejski otok island with the traditional Pletna boat — a flat, covered wooden boat powered by a standing rower (similar to a Venetian gondola). The crossing costs 18€ (round trip) and is an experience in itself. On the island, 99 steps lead to the Church of the Assumption (15th century). Tradition: Ring the wishing bell three times — then the wish will come true.
Bled Castle (Blejski grad) on the rock offers the best panoramic view over the lake. Inside: a museum on the region's history, a castle printing shop (you can print your own certificate), and a wine cellar. Entrance: 15€.
Activities at Lake Bled
- Walk around the lake: 6 km, about 1.5 hours. Flat, well-developed path — perfect for families and especially beautiful in the morning (before the tourist groups).
- Swimming: The lake warms up to 24°C in summer. Thermal springs on the west shore feed the warm spots. Grajsko kopališče beach: 9€ entrance.
- Rowing: Rent rowboats (15€/hour) and paddle to the island yourself — cheaper and more athletic than the Pletna.
- Osojnica viewpoint: The secret photo spot above the lake (20 min. steep ascent from the west side). The view from above of the island, castle, and Alps is THE Instagram motif.
💡 Tipp
The best time at Lake Bled: early morning (before 8 AM) or at sunset. In the height of summer, it can get very crowded during the day. Early risers are rewarded with mist over the lake and absolute peace. The Kremšnita (cream slice) at Café Park on the lakeshore is legendary.
