Lake Bohinj (Bohinjsko jezero)

If Lake Bled is the famous sibling, then Lake Bohinj is the more beautiful, quieter one — the one preferred by connoisseurs. Just 26 km west of Bled lies Slovenia's largest natural lake (4.3 km long, 45 m deep) in the midst of the Triglav National Park, surrounded by steep mountains and dense forests. Here, there is no island, no castle, no pomp — just breathtaking nature and silence.

The water of Lake Bohinj is crystal clear, pleasantly cool in summer (18–22°C), and surrounded by a narrow pebble beach. Swimming is allowed everywhere — the east shore by the Church of St. John and the west shore at the Zlatorog stone are the most popular spots.

Activities at Lake Bohinj

• Walk around the lake: 12 km, about 3.5 hours. The path leads partly on forest trails, partly on gravel. Spectacular in sections (north shore with rock outcrops).
• Savica Waterfall: Slovenia's most famous waterfall plunges 78 m into a rock basin — the source river of the Sava Bohinjka. 20 minutes ascent from the parking lot on the west shore. Entrance: 3€.
• Vogel cable car: From the south side of the lake to 1,535 m height in 5 minutes. At the top: panoramic view of the entire lake and the Julian Alps. In winter: ski area. In summer: starting point for high mountain hikes. Cable car: 22€ return.
• Kayaking & SUP: Rental stations on the east shore. Kayak from 12€/hour, SUP from 15€/hour. Gliding over the mirror-smooth lake in the morning silence is meditative.
• Mostnica Gorge: North of the lake, a path leads into the narrow gorge formed by glacial mills — spectacular and less crowded than the Vintgar Gorge.
