Triglav & Hiking
The Triglav (2,864 m) is not just Slovenia's highest mountain — it is the national symbol, featured on the flag and euro coins. "Every Slovenian must climb Triglav once in their life," goes the unwritten rule. Whether you aim for the summit or hike on the many other trails of the national park: The Julian Alps offer world-class alpine hiking.
Climbing Triglav
The classic route leads through the Krma Valley (from the north side) or from Pokljuka via the Vodnikov dom hut and further over the secured ridge to the summit. The tour is doable in 2 days (overnight in a mountain hut at about 2,000 m). Difficulty: demanding — you should be sure-footed and free from vertigo, via ferrata sections (steel cables) near the summit. Mountain guide recommended for the inexperienced (from 200€/person). Best time: July–September.
The Best Hikes
- Vintgar Gorge (Soteska Vintgar): 1.6 km on wooden walkways above the emerald green Radovna, past rapids and the 16 m high Šum Waterfall. Flat, family-friendly, and breathtaking. 20 minutes from Bled. Entrance: 10€. Come early in the morning or after 4 PM.
- Seven Lakes Valley (Dolina Triglavskih jezer): The royal hike: 7 mountain lakes at various altitudes, connected by karst landscape and alpine meadows. 2 days (overnight in the Zasavska koča hut). One of the most beautiful trekking routes in the Alps.
- Alpe Adria Trail (Slovenian stages): The long-distance trail from Großglockner to Muggia/Trieste runs through the Soča Valley and the Julian Alps — the Slovenian stages are among the most spectacular.
- Vršič Pass: 50 hairpin bends over Slovenia's highest Alpine pass (1,611 m). From the top: fantastic circular hikes to Slemenova špica (1 hour) or Prisojnik (4 hours, demanding). Reachable by bus from Kranjska Gora or Bovec.
- Pokljuka Plateau: Gentle high plateau at 1,300 m with forests, alpine meadows, and views of Triglav. Easy hikes, in winter biathlon stadium and cross-country trails.
Mountain Huts
Slovenia has a dense network of mountain huts (planinske koče) in the Triglav National Park — simple but catered with hot meals, soup, and sleeping space. Reservation in high summer (July/August) is strongly recommended via pzs.si (Planinska zveza Slovenije). Overnight: 20–35€/person, half board: 35–50€.
Achtung
Triglav and the high tours in the Julian Alps are serious mountain tours. Weather changes can be extremely rapid — thunderstorms with lightning in summer, snowfall even possible in July. Always check the weather forecast (meteo.arso.gov.si), bring equipment for all conditions, and realistically assess your own abilities.
