Kranjska Gora & Planica
Kranjska Gora is Slovenia's most famous winter sports resort — a charming Alpine village at the tri-border area of Slovenia–Austria–Italy at the foot of the Vršič Pass. In winter: ski slopes, cross-country trails, and the legendary ski flying hill of Planica. In summer: hiking, cycling, and the picturesque Zelenci Nature Reserve.
Winter in Kranjska Gora
- Ski area: 18 kilometers of slopes, 20 km of cross-country trails, good for beginners and families. Not a hardcore ski area, but cozy and affordable (day ski pass: about 38€). The Ski World Cup slalom is held annually on the Podkoren slope.
- Planica: The mecca of ski jumping. The Planica flying hill is one of the largest in the world (world record distances!). The Nordic Center Planica has a museum, a wind tunnel, and the opportunity to jump yourself (on the mini hill). Museum entrance: 8€.
- Cross-country skiing: The 20 km trails in the valley are well-prepared and freely accessible. The Planica Valley is particularly beautiful.
Summer in Kranjska Gora
- Zelenci Nature Reserve: Only 4 km west: an emerald green karst spring from which the Sava Dolinka originates. Boardwalk through the moor, photogenic and mystical. Free of charge.
- Lake Jasna: Small mountain lake on the outskirts with views of the Julian Alps and a bronze statue of the mythical Goldhorn ibex (Zlatorog). Perfect for a picnic.
- Cycling: Well-developed bike paths through the valley. E-bike rental in town (from 30€/day). The bike path to Tarvisio (Italy) through the Karawanks bike tunnel is an experience.
- Vršič Pass: From Kranjska Gora over 24 hairpin bends to Slovenia's highest pass (1,611 m). By car, bike (for the brave), or bus. The Russian Chapel halfway up commemorates Russian prisoners of war who built the pass road during World War I.
