Soča Valley

The Soča (Italian: Isonzo) is the most beautiful river most people have ever seen — and that's no exaggeration. Its water has a color that shouldn't exist: an unreal, luminous emerald green-turquoise, caused by the high calcium carbonate content and changing between jade, aquamarine, and deep blue depending on the light.

The Soča springs from a karst source below Triglav and flows 138 km through narrow gorges, wide gravel beds, and gentle valleys to the Adriatic. The upper Soča Valley between Bovec and Kobarid is Slovenia's outdoor paradise — and at the same time one of the most tragic battlefields of World War I (12 Isonzo battles, 1915–1917).

Outdoor Activities

  • Rafting: The classic in the Soča Valley. The rapids between Bovec and Kobarid offer whitewater from class II–IV. Half-day tour: 40–60€, full day: 70–90€. Possible from 6 years old (family-friendly sections).
  • Canyoning: Climbing through narrow gorges, jumping into natural pools, and abseiling down waterfalls — the Sušec and Fratarica gorges are world-class. From 60€/person.
  • Kayaking: For advanced: The Soča offers some of the best whitewater kayaking routes in Europe. Beginners can paddle calm sections or practice on Lake Bohinj.
  • Zipline over the Učja Gorge: The longest zipline route in Europe: 566 m over the Učja Gorge at 60 m height. Spectacular and adrenaline-pumping. From 35€.
  • Via Ferrata on Prisojnik: Secured climbing routes on the rock faces of the Julian Alps. Various difficulty levels, equipment rentable in Bovec.

Historical Sites

During World War I, the Soča Valley was the scene of the twelve Isonzo battles between Italy and Austria-Hungary (1915–1917). Over 300,000 soldiers died. The Kobarid Museum (entrance: 7€) was awarded as the best European war museum — poignant, moving, and excellently curated. The ossuary on Monte Grappa and the positions on the Kolovrat ridge remind of the horrors.
