Adam's Peak — the Sacred Mountain★★★

Adam's Peak (Sri Pada, 2,243 m) is Sri Lanka's holiest mountain — and one of the most significant pilgrimage sites in South Asia. At the summit is a depression in the rock, revered by Buddhists as the footprint of Buddha, by Hindus as the footprint of Shiva, by Muslims as the footprint of Adam, and by Christians as the footprint of the Apostle Thomas. Rarely does a place unite so many religions.

The Ascent

The ascent involves 5,500 steps and takes 3–5 hours (depending on fitness). Most pilgrims start at 2:00–3:00 AM to experience the sunrise at the summit — an unforgettable experience when the sun rises over the highlands and the triangular shadow of the mountain casts over the cloud cover.

The path is well-lit and lined with tea shops and rest stations. The atmosphere during the pilgrimage season (December–May) is unique: thousands of pilgrims of all religions and ages climb the mountain in an atmosphere of joy, devotion, and mutual encouragement.

Practical Information

  • Season: December – May (the path is dangerous during the rainy season and the tea shops are closed)
  • Starting Point: Nallathanniya (Dalhousie), accessible from Hatton by bus
  • Equipment: Warm clothing (it can be 5 °C cold at the summit), flashlight, water
  • Best Nights: Full Moon (Poya Days) — thousands of pilgrims, magical atmosphere, but extremely crowded

💡 Tipp

Start at 2:30 AM for the sunrise. The steps are steep but doable — even older pilgrims manage the ascent. Wear multiple layers: it's warm at the bottom, icy at the top. After the descent, reward yourself with a hot cup of Ceylon tea at the foot of the mountain.

Achtung

During Poya Days (full moon), the ascent can be so crowded that you stand in traffic on the steps — expect 5–7 hours instead of 3–4. It is much quieter during the week.
