Nuwara Eliya — Little England★★
Nuwara Eliya (pronounced "Nu-ra Elia") is located at an altitude of 1,868 meters and is the center of Ceylon tea cultivation. The British colonial rulers built the city in the 19th century as a retreat from the tropical heat — and incidentally planted the first tea bushes that would forever change Sri Lanka.
The city itself, with its colonial buildings, golf course, and horse racing track, has a slightly quirky British charm — often referred to as "Little England." But the real allure lies in the surroundings:
Tea Plantations & Factories
The landscape around Nuwara Eliya consists of endless, vibrant green tea plantations stretching over gentle hills — one of the most iconic images of Sri Lanka. Tamil pickers in colorful saris move through the rows, collecting the top two leaves and the bud — from which the world-famous Ceylon tea is made.
- Pedro Tea Estate: The most famous factory with a tour and tasting. 500 LKR entrance fee. Coordinates: [6.9550, 80.7290].
- Mackwoods Labookellie: Also popular, free cup of tea after the tour.
- Heritance Tea Factory: A luxury hotel in a converted tea factory — perfect for afternoon tea with a panoramic view.
Gregory Lake
The artificial lake in the city center offers boat rides, walking paths, and a relaxed atmosphere. On weekends, Sri Lankan families picnic here.
💡 Tipp
Nuwara Eliya is surprisingly cold at night (down to 5 °C!) — pack warm clothing. The tea plantations around the city are most photogenic in the early morning when mist drifts through the hills. For an authentic tea tasting: don't just visit the tourist factories, but also smaller plantations in the area.
