Knuckles Range — Pure Wilderness★★

The Knuckles Mountain Range (Dumbara Kanduvetiya) is Sri Lanka's last great wilderness — a UNESCO World Heritage site of rugged mountains, dense mist forests, roaring waterfalls, and biodiversity that is astonishing in such a small area. The name comes from the shape of the mountain range, which resembles the knuckles of a fist.

Unlike the tourist magnets Ella and Nuwara Eliya, the Knuckles Range is almost untouched by mass tourism. Here you hike through mountain villages where life seems unchanged for centuries, through pepper and cardamom forests, and along paths known only to local guides.

Trekking in the Knuckles Range

  • Day Hikes: Several routes of 3–6 hours, including the Knuckles Peak Trail and the Mini World's End Trail. Guide required (2,000–4,000 LKR / 6–11 €).
  • Multi-Day Treks: 2–3 days through the wilderness with overnight stays in villages or tents. An unforgettable experience off the beaten path.
  • Waterfalls: Over 50 waterfalls in the region, including the spectacular Sera Ella.

💡 Tipp

Definitely take a local guide — the paths are poorly marked and the terrain is challenging. The best base is Riverston or Kandy. Good hiking boots and rain gear are essential. The Knuckles are an absolute highlight for experienced hikers that most tourists miss.
