Ella — Backpacker Paradise in the Mountains★★★
Ella is a sleepy mountain village that has become the most popular travel destination in the highlands in recent years — and for good reason. The combination of spectacular mountain scenery, relaxed atmosphere, good cafés, and the best hikes in Sri Lanka makes Ella irresistible.
Nine Arches Bridge
The Nine Arches Bridge (Ahas Namaye Palama) is the most photographed structure in Sri Lanka: a nine-arched stone bridge from the British colonial era, spanning 24 meters high through tropical vegetation. The bridge was built entirely of stone and cement — without a single piece of steel. The most spectacular moment is when the blue train crosses the bridge (scheduled around 9:30 AM and 3:00 PM, but Sri Lanka trains are rarely on time).
Little Adam's Peak
An easy hike (45 minutes) to a viewpoint with a magnificent 360-degree panorama over the Ella Gap — the dramatic gorge through which you can see all the way to the sea. Perfect for sunrise. The path leads through tea plantations and is manageable even for inexperienced hikers.
Ella Rock
The more challenging alternative to Little Adam's Peak: a 2–3 hour climb through tea plantations and forest to the summit (1,041 m). The view over the highlands is overwhelming. Start early in the morning and take a local guide — the path is not consistently marked.
Ravana Falls
A 25-meter high waterfall right on the main road, named after the demon king Ravana from the Hindu epic Ramayana, who is said to have hidden his kidnapped princess Sita here. Most impressive during the rainy season, you can swim in the pool below.
💡 Tipp
Stay at least 2–3 nights in Ella. In the morning, visit the Nine Arches Bridge (best at 6:30 AM before the tourists arrive), hike Little Adam's Peak in the late morning, visit Ravana Falls in the afternoon, and enjoy the relaxed café scene in the evening. The accommodations in the hills above Ella offer the best views.
Achtung
Do NOT stand on the tracks at the Nine Arches Bridge when a train is coming — it sounds obvious, but accidents happen every year because tourists pose for Instagram photos. Get off the tracks in time!
