The Horton Plains are a UNESCO World Heritage site: a high plateau over 2,100 meters high with mist forests, grasslands, endemic animal and plant species, and Sri Lanka's most dramatic viewpoint — World's End.

World's End is an 880-meter vertical cliff, the edge of which can be reached within a few steps (no barriers!). In clear weather, the view extends to the southern coast and the Indian Ocean. Nearby is Mini World's End with a 270-meter deep cliff.

The Circular Hike

A well-marked circular trail of 9.5 km (about 3–4 hours) leads through the grasslands to World's End, Mini World's End, and the Baker's Falls — a 20-meter high waterfall amidst the mist forest. The landscape is more reminiscent of the Scottish Highlands than the tropics.

Wildlife

With a bit of luck, you can see sambar deer (they are accustomed to humans and come close), rare purple-faced langurs, the endemic Sri Lanka leopard (rare), and numerous endemic bird species.

💡 Tipp

Start no later than 6:00 AM — by 10 AM, clouds roll in and completely obscure the view at World's End. This means leaving at 5 AM, as the drive from Nuwara Eliya takes 45 minutes. The early morning hours are also the coldest (5–10 °C) — warm clothing is a must! Pack breakfast and water, as there is nothing to buy in the park.

Achtung

There are NO railings or barriers at World's End — the abyss is real and 880 meters deep. Keep a distance from the edge, especially in the wind. Hold children's hands. Do not search for the edge in the fog!
