Mirissa — Whale Watching & Beach Life★★★
Mirissa is a relaxed beach town that excels at two things: dream beach and whale watching. The offshore marine trench attracts blue whales and sperm whales astonishingly close to the coast between November and April — an unforgettable experience.
Whale Watching
Mirissa is the best place in the world for blue whale sightings. The animals — up to 30 meters long and 150 tons heavy — pass by here on their annual migration. Additionally, there are sperm whales, dolphins, and occasionally even orcas.
- Season: November – April (peak season December – March)
- Sighting Rate: 90% for dolphins, 70–80% for blue whales in peak season
- Duration: 5–6 hours (departure around 6:30 AM)
- Cost: 7,500–15,000 LKR (21–43 €) depending on boat size and provider
Mirissa Beach
A beautiful crescent-shaped bay with soft sand, palm trees, and the picturesque Coconut Tree Hill (Parrot Rock) at the eastern end — a small promontory with a group of palms that becomes an Instagram hotspot at sunset. The west side of the beach is quieter, the east side livelier with bars and restaurants.
Secret Beach
A small hidden beach west of the main bay, accessible via a short path. Quieter and more romantic than the main beach.
💡 Tipp
Book whale watching with a responsible provider who maintains minimum distances and does not approach the whales. The cheapest providers are often the most reckless. Bring travel sickness tablets — the sea can be rough!
Achtung
The sea on the whale-watching boats should not be underestimated. Those prone to seasickness should definitely take travel sickness tablets (buy them in advance at the pharmacy). Children under 6 years are not recommended.
